In the fall of 2010, I directed a production of A Grand Night For Singing at The Labuda Arts Center on the campus of DeSales University. Great place to work as a director or an actor. I did Man of La Mancha there as an actor in 2004, as they have a full Equity professional summertime program with The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. Directing there was like coming home.
On November 24th, Ed and I went to Bethany, DE for Thanksgiving. THANKSGIVING AT THE BEACH!!! Was great spending time with the family.
Then I went on to create a Christmas Cabaret, at The WorkShop Theater in midtown Manhattan. Was a great success, with Bob Manus, Jodie Bentley, Charles Gerber, Emily Zacharias, Richard Kent Green, Joanie Schumacher, Wende O'Reilly, Jeff Paul, Leslie Gwynn, Heather Massie, Sue Wallack, Shelley McPherson, Virginia Roncetti, MaryRuth Baggot, Georgia Southern, Natalie Smith, Nelson Lugo and Jed Dickson. It was such a great time working on popular and not so well known Christmas, Hannakah and Quanza songs, to celebrate the season.
Next, came MOVING within our building. To a huge one bedroom apartment 10 flights above where we were, and now with a spectacular view of the hudson river as well as lower Manhattan. We are truly blessed.
In February, or actually still in January, I started work on two different projects.
The first was a three day event, called One! Two! Three!, that included full readings of two different new musicals the first two evenings, Life on the Mississippi by Philip Hall, and Bobby, The Middle-Aged Celebrity, by Robert I. Rubinsky. And one evening of 'songs' from 6 different Musical Theatre Writers and Writing Teams. All three nights went extremely well. The three day event took place February 3rd, 4th and 5th, 2011. And, Bobby is now gearing up for a three month run at The WorkShop, Friday nights - late... literally beginning tonight. Ed and I are taking our friend Arline with us to the opening.
Then came the Valentines Cabaret one week later. Talk about INSANE. I have to make a promise not to do that again.... back to back productions like that.
However, the Valentine's Cabaret, entitled It Takes Two, went off tremendously. It was mostly duets evening from all walks of 'love'. there were also several ensemble numbers thrown in. It was a beautiful event, with some incredible performers and performances. The cast included: Kelli Maguire, Jodie Bentley, Sue Wallack, Virginia Roncetti, Heather Massie, Laurie Graff, Ellen Lindsay, Steven Stein- Grainger, Mick Bleyer, Sean Patrick Folster, Bill Brown, David Gable and Michael Shelle. Was truly wonderful gift working with these people and on these love songs.
Off and on am working odd jobs, the Javits, a day here or there as a stand-in or extra on commercials or film or tv.
And, now, am in the thick of pre-production on Life x3, a very compelling permutation on a theme by Yamina Reza. I just finished casting, and begin rehearsals in 10 days. It opens May 2nd for a two week run at The Amateur Comedy Club, the longest continuing performing arts organization in the country so I am told. I am very excited to work on this play, and at this theatre. I did Laughter on the 23rd. Floor there two years ago. It's a great haven to work at, a good job, and right here in midtown.
Again, I am blessed.
